La Piedra del SOL
The Piedra del Sol, also known as the Aztec calendar, belongs to the Mexican culture, past pre-Columbian Mesoamerica.
This huge monument could have functioned as a base of the solar calendar systems and ritual, and as a starting point for complicated astronomical observations.
Has not determined the exact original location of this monument, but it is known that he was somewhere in the main square of Tenochtitlan, where were the Templo Mayor and the main buildings of worship and political power.
Finding
The Stone of the Sun was discovered on December 17, 1790 in the south side of the Plaza Mayor of Mexico City, in an area near the canal that ran through the side of the Southern National Palace. During the work of leveling of the square, in 1790, were discovered two stones most famous of ancient indigenous Coatlicue Max and the Piedra del Sol, or Aztec Calendar. The Coatlicue was forgot in the courtyard of the Royal University and then returned to bury, and the schedule was attached to a wall of the cathedral.
The first study on the Piedra del Sol did Leon and Antonio Gama in 1792. Since then, there have been lots of studies on the monolith. One of the constant questions about this sculpture calendar is whether his position was horizontal or vertical. Now it is known that the position of the Piedra del Sol should be horizontal and showed the image of the sun as highlighted in many other monuments of cylindrical shape. There have also been several proposals on the numerical value of each element present in the relief, so that through complicated mathematical operations, it is assumed that the monolith represents the sum of astronomical observations and is the result of complicated computations calendar .
From the Cathedral to the National Museum
After its discovery, the Piedra del Sol was posted on the west side of the wall of one of the towers Ilustraciónla Metropolitan Cathedral.
In 1885 the military government porfiriano off the monolith of the wall of the cathedral, for the purpose of driving the main hall of the National Museum, which was located (from the government of Maximilian) in one of the courtyards of the National Palace, with exit to the street Currency. Symbolism of the Piedra del Sol
The Piedra del Sol is a monument that shows a solar elements associated with the passage of time. The design of this huge sculpture is made up of a central image surrounded by five concentric circles. In each of these bands are circular elements that make up the meaning of the symbolic connotation of this calendar relief.
